There are 83 apartment blocks in the Kathmandu Valley, either completed or under construction. Not so long ago, Kathmandu’s building regulations prohibited high-rise structures, so this represents a massive change in the cityscape. But we tend to forget those men and women who work hard in dangerous conditions to build these apartment blocks. They are like nomads: they eat and live on the construction site, and when the job is done, they move to a new site. This group of teenagers from Jhulangia, Bardia are barely out of high school. They came to the city as construction workers, as there are very few options back in the village. They got the opportunity after hearing that the person who had contributed to the construction of a bridge near Jhulangia was looking for labour for Orchid Apartments in Kathmandu. It seemed like a good way to pay him back while earning a living. They risk their lives working on high-rise constructions. But most of them are excited to be building homes for “rich” people even if the new apartment owners would most likely not care who was behind the construction, and where the labour came from. For these young boys, far from home, it is a matter of pride; they are standing on their own feet, without relying upon others. Most of the boys are from farming communities. They may be building the dreams of others, but they have their own dreams, too. They hope the high-rises of Kathmandu will take them somewhere else in the future.

QUESTION : Do we really need Bark or Moss to grow healthy orchids? This orchid lost its roots and became dehydrated. If we allowed a good drying out, and the plant had good light and humidity, will it recover and put out new roots? RIGHT!. I tried this after I nearly gave up on one orchid that had lost its roots through overwatering. I wanted to dry it out. I did this 2 months ago and I see the plant has survived and put out new roots and leaf. I have to confess I was inspired by a video I saw where the orchid is kept in a glass jar filled with stones only. And also the idea is confirmed by comments by Angeofjusticia ( a viewer). I have saved his brilliant video on saving rootless orchids in my favourites list. ( “How to save an orchid with`no roots“) He calls it “ Sphag and bag method“. Enjoy!. Since then I have put the orchid in Sphag and bag and then clay pellets currently. Will update as I see what happens….

I am not that old, but I know already how small this world is. Like when you are in High School and fall in love with a plant called Lycaste aromatica, and when a year after you finish college, one of your best friends happens to have 2 lying around his house, and GIVES YOU ONE. Or when you have a plant, and your not sure of the species, but it turns out that the plant will flower. Oddly enough, you have two other plants with the same genus, but you already know their flower color. It is interesting how life puts you on impromptu adventures. It was 11 pm while I was recording this, which is why the lighting sucks, and why I am so low energy. I know I fail… But believe me, the things I talk about in the video are extremely exciting to me, and I consider them adventures in my life! I had a great idea for another way to show you these plants… I was going to “lose” my gecko, and have an adventure looking for it, but I didn’t really have time to record as I was at Six Flags Sunday, and Monday my girlfriend was over.
