Caring for Orchids Indoors With These Basic Steps

Caring for Orchids Indoors With These Basic Steps

Article by Carl Harrison

If you want to begin with growing orchids you are going to have to know some simple strategies for taking care of them. It is crucial that you have some basic understanding of how to easily and quickly keep them healthy. You don’t have to worry because many of these tips that you are about to learn are so simple that you can begin using them right away. I am going to give you some basics of caring for orchids and how you can begin right away.

The Requirements of Orchids

The first thing we will have to get into is actually creating an environment in which they can prosper for years. There are many requirements that come with this task, but they are easy to implement and to remember for a long time. You will need temperature to be at least 70 degrees for optimum performance and maximum yields. Some species are able to tolerate lower temperatures but for an average this is good for the majority. If you are caring for orchids indoors this will be a little easier to control rather than the outside world. If you have your plants outside you should move them in at night when the temperatures tend to dip. This will keep them happy and healthy for a while.

Humidity is Something That You Should Add

Adding humidity is one of those steps that people overlook when in fact it is probably the easiest thing to do. Get a humidifier and place it near the area in which your plants are growing. This will give them plenty of moisture for their needs. Some have actually recommended that when caring for orchids indoors you can place a bowl of water on the heater which can facilitate these exact conditions that you are looking for. These are just two ways you can add moisture.

Don’t Forget That Over-watering is No Good

A misconception that is often witnessed by many is the fact that these plants do not need lots of water to stay alive and flourish. In fact it may surprise you that they will not need to be watered every day or even every other day depending on various factors. When the growing season is in and caring for orchids is a must this is when the most water will be used. You must make certain the soil does not become damp and soaked. This will lead to many complications in the future. For watering them correctly I would give them a simple spray each morning and if it is not enough spray it more often. These are just some things to think about when caring for orchids indoors.

Five Steps Orchid Growers Can Use For Taking Care of Orchids

Five Steps Orchid Growers Can Use For Taking Care of Orchids

Article by Carl Harrison

Orchids don’t just have three or four varieties; there are tons of different kinds that occur naturally. This does not include the hybrid versions that were created by horticulturalists. Orchid species outnumber mammals by at least four times. You can find these plants anywhere in the world living under the ground, on rocks and in trees.

Even though orchids look delicate, they actually aren’t. These plants are very resilient and adapt to a variety of environments. Many people don’t even consider growing these plants first because they think it’s just too complex. However, don’t let the origin scare you from growing them; orchids are easy to grow. All you need is the knowledge of your particular orchid variety including what requirements to follow and you can have orchids that thrive in your home and outside it too. Here is a five-step regime to help you care for your orchids and see to it that they thrive.

Step 1 – Water Carefully

When you have orchids, it’s important that you don’t kill them by overwatering. Many orchids growers make the ultimate but well-intentioned mistake of watering their plants when it is still damp. The problem with this is that too much moisture for them can lead to their disease and/or demise. If an orchid catches a fungal disease, this can lead you to deal with the root rot.

Orchids generally don’t need to be watered more than one time a week. However, before you do this, be sure you check the medium to see how damp it is. If it feels dry, then do water it. If it feels wet, hold off on watering it for another day. Choose a special potting matter that’s designed for your orchids. Regular soil can be too compact, not allowing the roots to breathe.

Each season may require a different watering schedule so keep this in mind. On top of that, each orchid variety is different; some orchid plants will use less water during their rest period while others will need the same amount.

Step 2 – Getting The Right Temperatures

It’s important to know at what temperature your orchid variety will thrive, as each one is different. Make sure that you know everything you can about this. The majority of orchids need a temperature drop in the overnight hours, anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees. Bear in mind that orchid plants also like cooler temperatures when they lie dormant.Step 3 – Providing Light

Your orchid is also going to need light to thrive. Giving it all you got isn’t going to help. It’s imperative that you give it the right kind of light, something it would see in the wild or close to it. Sunlight does work best. Ensure that what lighting you do give it won’t scorch the leaves or blooms. If you place them in sunlight, be sure to use a shade that will filter the light before it reaches the plants.

Step 4 – Increase Humidity Levels and Air Circulation

Orchids enjoy the humid air; after all, they originate in the steamy areas of the world. However, the humidity levels that orchids enjoy are not usually seen inside a home. For that reason, orchid growers will need to take the proper steps to give them this humidity level. Placing a bowl of water near them can do this.

Step 5 – Finish It Off With Fertilizer

Feeding your orchid plants is important; one step that generally most people tend to overlook. While outside orchids will gather their nutrients from rainwater or decayed plant-matter, an indoor orchid doesn’t have this luxury. Give your plants the nutrients they need by feeding it nitrogen based feed, usually once a week. Always follow the directions on the package.

Caring For Orchids Tips For Three Important Orchid Types

Caring For Orchids Tips For Three Important Orchid Types

Article by Alan Stables

Caring for orchids is not very hard if you know what you have to do, but the main problem is that there are over 25,000 orchid species out there that grow on 6 continents, in all kinds of conditions. While some live in the tropics in hot, humid habitats, others live in forests, in cold and shady conditions. So you must know your orchid well in order to provide it with the habitat it needs.

Phalenopsis is one of the most preferred orchids as a house plant. Having its origins in Southeast Asia and being epiphytic plants that live in the shadow, they must avoid direct sunlight and stay at a temperature between 21-29C during the day and 16-18C at night. A very important thing to take in consideration when dealing with a Phalenopsis orchid is that it has no specialized organs for retaining water, so the orchid should be watered abundantly and left until the soil dries, but never until the plant itself dries. The humidity should be between 50-80%. If you care correctly for your Phalenopsis plant she will bloom even multiple times a year.

Cattleya is also one of the most important orchid species, and originates from the tropical forests of Central and South-America. A temperature between 64°F – 71°F (18°C – 22 °C) is recommended, but it will also survive at 61°F (16 °C). If the temperature exceeds 70°F (21 °C) then you must soak it in water very often. Indirect east or west sun exposure suits it perfectly. Insufficient sunlight will result in the orchid being unable to bloom. And that would be a shame because Cattleya is one of the orchids with the biggest flowers that come in many beautiful colors such as yellow, pink, red or white. Flowering appears all year and lasts between 3 and 5 weeks. In winter times the plant needs water weekly while during the summer you must water it twice a week.

Cymbidium are known as one of the most grown orchids in the world, with one of the most durable flowers, that can last up to 8 weeks and that comes in many beautiful colors – from white, yellow and orange to red, brown and green. Having its origins in the temperate and tropical climates of Nepal, China, Japan and India, it doesn’t really like cold conditions, so you really need a heated environment for it in the winter. In summer, from June to September, take it outside if you have the possibility to do so. The watering differs a lot from one period of the year to the other. If in winter, watering every 2 weeks is sufficient, but in summer it needs to be watered daily. From spring to autumn it must be watered from the top down, leaving it to drain excess water in tray. Cymbidium is one of the orchid species that really needs chemicals fertilizers for a correct development. Caring correctly for your Cymbidium orchid will result in blooming from November to May.

Caring for orchids can differ from one orchid species to another so you will have to inform yourself what are the needs of your orchid type.

How to Water Orchids

How to Water Orchids

Article by Brandon Gregory

You would think watering orchids is a standard procedure that does not change from one species to another but as you will find out in this article on the way orchids are watered, there are many ways. Although care and watering orchids is a complex procedure it should not drive you away from growing these astonishing plants. Orchids cannot be compared to other flowers for a lot of reasons. The first, it is reckoned that there are more than 20,000 kinds, which include purebred sorts and loan-blends. Because of the numerous choices, you could make every room of your house prettier. In one of the rooms you should think over a more conventional kind that makes large beige flowers and in another room a kind that makes bright coloured flowers with lines or circles.

Unfortunately, because there are a few plants that demand intensive orchid care, a lot of people are convinced that all orchid types are too complicated to grow and preserve. In truth, a large number of types are the best for the ones that are just starting or for growers that cannot spend a lot of time growing these plants. Therefore, if you have always found orchids being beautiful and intriguing from distance but felt uneasy about buying your own plants, we want to encourage you to change your point of view but with plants with little requirements in managing them. How To Know Your Orchid Is In Trouble and Nurse It Back To Health

Orchids are resilient and can live in even the harshest climates. Despite this toughness, orchids are vulnerable to many different diseases and parasitic infestations. You can notice these problems whether you are an orchid lover or a novice gardener who wants to try their hand at growing orchids. There are several signs of pest infestations and diseases that you should be looking out for if you want to keep your orchids alive.

Warning Signs To Watch For In Your Orchid Plant

One way to tell if your orchids are having a problem is to closely examine the leaves and blossoms of the plant. For starters, any orchid that has blooms that don’t live very long may be having problems. Orchid blooms should last for several weeks as long as the plant is healthy. Remember that your orchid type may bloom a few times during the year so get familiar with your orchid kind so you know what is and is not normal.

Remember to look at the petals, too. If the orchid’s petals are discolored or seem to have dark flecks or holes, then there may be a reason to be concerned.

Look for damage or discoloration on the leaves of your orchid. Most healthy orchid leaves have a glossy green to them. If your plants do not then it could be some sort of problem. However, be sure to eliminate the environmental causes such as too much sunlight or temperatures that are not optimal for it before you immediately suspect illnesses.

Possible Pests That Can Damage Your Orchids

There are all kinds of pests that can damage your orchid plants including aphids, fungus gnats, white flies, etc. Here’s a brief look at some of the pests mentioned.

Aphids – Orchids are most in danger of dying from the aphid insect. They kill the plant by sucking out the nutrients then leave behind waste products that make it vulnerable to mold. When you really look at it, it’s a double whammy for your orchids.

Fungus Gnats – These insects will breed in the soil of your plant’s pot especially if it has a lot of moisture. Fungus gnats are similar to root rot. As you may know, root rot is a big challenge to take care of in your plants.

White flies – White flies are pretty with their tiny yellow colored heads with pale wings that holds some resemblance to a tiny flower. However, looks can be deceiving. These parasitic insects are usually found in clusters on the underneath of petals or leaves. White flies are known to attack most, if not all, vegetation and spread viral diseases. This insect type is a nuisance for not only farmers but also horticulturalists.

Other Plant Destructive Insects

Other insects that can damage your orchids include the mealy bugs, scale insects and spider mites. Mealy bugs and scale insects will attack the orchid’s leaves, which can make them turn to a yellowish color. Spider mites, on the other hand, present themselves as bright-colored flecks.

Types of Treatments For Your Orchids

Many people use pesticides to get rid of the diseases or pests that are inflicting damage to their orchids. This has proven quite effective. This method of getting rid of damage causing problems has brought up two issues.

For starters, there is an increase of resistance in many of the organisms that attack the orchids, especially when exposed to them on a continuous basis. Second, pesticides are very un-environmentally friendly, which tends to turn people off from using the toxic chemicals. This is especially true in homes where small children are.

If you’re looking to be eco-friendly and keep your orchids healthy, then wash all of the plant’s parts completely, drying them well with care after you are done. Results are often seen after several times of doing this method so don’t become glum if you don’t see immediate results. You should also repot your plant in fresh soil/matter so you can get rid of fungal problems.

Since the majority of insects seem fascinated by the color yellow, place the colored tacky paper up close to the plant so it may trap the insects, keeping them from reproducing and spreading their damage. You can also wipe down your plant’s affected areas with neem oil.

Remove the plant that is infected away from other plant life so that it does not cause the disease to spread. While you can do a lot, you have to remember to be patient and give your orchid the care it needs to survive and return back to the splendor it once was.
